The singer/songwriter/civil rights activist was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on this day in 1933 in North Carolina. Notoriously "difficult" during her long career, it was revealed after her death in France in 2003 that Simone had battled bipolar disorder her entire life. Little known fact: During her last years in the French countryside she was known to fire her shotgun in the general direction of cars approaching her property. My kind of woman.
