Born Edna Rae Gillooly in Detroit on this day in 1932, Ellen Burstyn is a multiple Tony, Emmy, Oscar and Golden Globe nominee and winner. She's shown here in Requiem For A Dream (2000), a film which garnered her 10 various awards and 5 nominations, including an Oscar nod.

I never want to see Requiem For A Dream again. And that's a compliment. For a film to hurt that much, to strike so deeply that it actually pained me, both during and afterwards, is a testimony to the films power. And a huge part of that was Ms. Burstyn's performance.
