BILLY WILDER

The director, producer and screenwriter died on this day in 2002 at the age of 95. His 60 films include Sunset Boulevard (shown above), The Lost Weekend, and Some Like it Hot, which inspired the epitaph on his gravestone that reads "I'm A Writer, But Then Nobody's Perfect." A refugee from Europe's Nazi regime, Wilder lost his mother, grandmother and stepfather at Auschwitz.
