TEXAS SENATE TO TRIM SOME FAT

The Texas Senate has passed legislation prohibiting the use of trans fats in most restaurant foods.
Proponents said the move would help fight obesity and reduce health insurance costs.
It would place Texas alongside the state of California and New York City in banning the potentially hazardous fats.
The legislation would initially affect chain establishments and, by late 2011, apply to all Texas restaurants.
Certain caterers, nonprofit organizations and homeless shelters are among the entities that would be exempt from the ban.
Bakery items would also be exempt.
